The politics of gender are complex, highly-charged and perfectly suited for the lacerating wit of playwright Young Jean Lee. In her latest experiment she and six charismatic performers band together in a hilarious and disorienting exploration of feminism and gender fluidity. This wordless comedy reveals (literally) the space between how we identify ourselves and what we could become if unhampered by cultural norms.

Young Jean Lee approaches playwriting by asking herself “What’s the last show in the world I would ever want to make?” This charged question has been the impetus of productions that have challenged and unsettled audiences worldwide and allowed Lee to create a play without words about the female experience. The witty and acerbic Lee has been seen at OtB with works that confronted the stereotypes of being Asian American (Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven) and African American culture (THE SHIPMENT). She is the recipient of the 2011 Spalding Gray Award and was recently named as one of the inaugural class of Doris Duke Performing Artists, a multi-year award with peers such as Richard Maxwell, Ralph Lemon, Marc Bamuthi Joseph and Liz LeCompte (The Wooster Group).

UNTITLED FEMINIST SHOW was co-commissioned through the Spalding Gray Award consortium including On the Boards, Performance Space 122, Walker Art Center and the Andy Warhol Museum.
