In response to a 2007 New Yorker feature on his life and work, the artist Trimpin received a stash of letters originally sent from the Gurs internment camp where the entire Jewish community from his hometown in Germany was sent in 1940. Using these letters as inspiration and the start for a libretto, Trimpin and director/narrator Rinde Eckert pair world history and personal biography in The Gurs Zyklus. The work features 3 female vocalists and a host of Trimpin’s original kinetic sculptures, including the fire organ.
Trimpin is a kinetic sculptor, sound artist, composer and a MacArthur Genius Award winner who has worked and lived in the US since emmigrating here from Germany in 1979. He is the subject of a documentary, TRIMPIN: the sound of invention. Rinde Eckert is an Obie Award-winning writer, director, composer and performer last seen at OtB in 1992.
