Intuition Wins Jun 18, 2012

Feist sings, "What gives, what helps the intuition? I'll know, I'll know. I won't have to be shown." Working with Vanessa DeWolf's Unrehearsed Ensemble has been a completely joyful experience--a childlike joy that comes from being engaged in playtime. A deep satisfaction that comes from honing in on my intuitive impulses and following them to their fullest, most ridiculous end.

Legends Jun 17, 2012

As predicted, the mainstage show of Weekend 2 is like a deck of wild cards, misanthropic rock film, designed chaos, surrealist history, and well, Bolero!

Fucking, trouble, hysteria, vomit, and a bit of chaos - God, I LOVE On the Boards! Jun 17, 2012

I took in both the Studio and Mainstage show in one evening.  I know…greedy, right?

STUDIO

Erin Pike is out of a box in a race to erase, as the minutes methodically click on.  Pikes determination to complete absence through cleaning moves me from calm to anxious in only 13 minutes.  There's panic in those lines, and then blue barf.

NWNW 2012—second weekend Jun 17, 2012

Seeing the Studio and Mainstage Showcases, punctuated by a hastily gobbled slice of pizza in between, makes for a long night of artistic exploration.

She took the tablecloth down to the sea and called it fashion! Jun 17, 2012

Expecting Bad News from the Government is the driving force behind a life of listless thrust. The black core that rots any sprout of optimism, the obvious outcome: a world of crap...so live as if your gonna die tomorrow. There's a weird Buddhist overlay here as nihilism and living in the present moment interchange under the smashing drums and nerve gnashing guitar. Richard Lefebvre and Erika Mayfield exchanging taunts and jabs of encouragement, wallowing in the gloom of glamorous punk shit while looking all the dark superstars of the underground.

I know that look. The intense focus fueled by a nuclear rod burning white hot. Laser-like precision resting behind a glacial facade. Quiet calm concealing fire and once unleashed the withering heat sanitizes any surface and will pass through titanium like butter.

To be honest, the experience of being an artist making work for a festival is challenging.  You have limited possibilities of light, set, and costume elements,  Your time is limited.  Your tech time is limited (though OtB goes above and beyond being accommodating on all fronts).  And the worst part, you have absolutely no control over what other artists are doing and how that frames the readiness or saturation of where the audience is when your piece is in front of them.

Love, Darkness, Light and Loathing Jun 10, 2012

Last night I dashed from the Marriage Equality Gala at the Convention Cetner to OTB to take in the Mainstage show, effectively missing my opportunity to see Ron Reagan Jr (a ballet dancer!) speak on behalf of the fight to defend marriage equality in Washington State in order to take in the new works of Hand2Mouth, Mike Pham, Sara Edwards, and Kate Wallich.

You Jump, I Jump Jun 10, 2012

This festival provides a laboratory for contemporary artists to dive into risks, navigate through obstacles, and test out something new. That "newness" is a scary thing, as many of the artists said in their interviews. While contemporary artists are "risky innovators," that doesn't mean they don't get scared from time to time. But the beauty of this laboratory is that it is more of a playground; it is a place to climb, jump, and ride these new creations in a way that is so wonderfully celebrated by its creators and its audiences.
