I discovered treasures and insights tonight that I’d originally missed.

Carousel Feb 10, 2012

When I was in 6th grade, I was so hyped to go see Les Miz at the Playhouse Theater in Cleveland. Looking back, I'm embarassed by my Broadway phase (as are so many of us) but there is one very clear image that remains with me from that production: Valjean and Javert in the sewer system. Yes, it IS, isn't it? Feb 10, 2012

Yes, the Past is a Grotesque Animal.

Meaning, I think, you look at the past with a mix of strangeness, wonder, some horror perhaps, or a little distaste, or amusement; mostly, it is a being which feels completely Other, which only enhances the strangeness because, at the same time, you know you are connected to it.
