(blahblahblah)...BANG! Dec 15, 2007

Washington Ensemble Theatre’s blahblahblahBANG confronts you with two distinct modes of performance. The first includes rock climbing, aerials, striptease – typical of On the Boards’ self-described  “weird art environment. ”  ”¦BANG’s second mode remains true to its source, the 19th Century naturalistic drama Hedda Gabler, wherein the narrative proceeds through a realistic plotting of action and emotional argument that lead to Ibsen’s dark conclusion.

Doggie treats, acrobatics,  “fuck ” (the word), fucking (the act), Radiohead, regurgitation, and a dream sequence featuring those creepy translucent plastic Halloween masks, make up just a short list of the reasons that  “blahblahblahBANG ” should have been an absurd and spectacular theatrical abomination, but which, as it turns out, the Washington Ensemble Theatre manages to miraculously utilize in the creation of a coherent, deeply felt, and thoroughly entertaining production of a classic Western theatre mainstay. Faustin Linyekula's Festival of Lies Dec 1, 2007

When the Belgians created the prison they called the Congo, they gave it sort of half a national anthem, using the same melody as the Belgian anthem, but with new words, to the effect that Africans give thanks to King Leopold for bringing civilization. Then Mobutu gave it an anthem and Kabila and others too, one after another the soundtrack for the modern tragedy of Central Africa, which we hear in "Festival of Lies" as part of the score for a reenactment of this tragedy in dance, an art form not often given to such subjects.
